Pupil Services Update

As the new year quickly approaches, so does the second semester. Before we know it, we will be looking at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

With that in mind, we need to remain focused on the reality that there is much to be accomplished before this year comes to a close. Some key points and reminders for our full-time virtual students that we need to be aware of are highlighted in this newsletter.

Graduation Progress

In order to look forward to graduation, RVA Consortium students must meet their resident district’s Graduation Requirements outlined in their board policies.  The RVA school counselors work with the resident school counselors to ensure students are on track for graduation. If your district’s graduation requirements change, please remember to notify the RVA.

RVA Scholarship Program

Currently, the RVA offers the Academic Excellence Scholarship and the Technical Excellence Scholarship to our graduating students.  In our efforts to offer the best education possible for our students and to prepare them to be successful after graduation, we are looking to build our scholarship program for students graduating from the RVA High School who are pursuing their goals of further education.

While it is the resident district’s decision as to what local scholarships RVA students are eligible for, most districts allow RVA students to apply for community based local scholarships that do not specify a requirement of being a graduate of a specific high school. It is our hope that as we identify scholarship sponsors specifically for RVA High School students, our students will have more opportunities for finding financial support for their post secondary education.  If you have any questions on the RVA Scholarship program or if you are aware of a possible scholarship sponsor for RVA High School graduates, please let me know.

ACT

The ACT is right around the corner!  A huge thank you to all of our partner districts for organizing the testing for our shared RVA - Consortium students.  We recently sent each of the consortium districts an ACT newsletter that contains important information, test prep, materials, how to submit the RVA tests to ACT, and more.  Here is the newsletter for your reference:

RVA ACT Newsletter

District and School Assessment Coordinators will soon be receiving a list of students for their district who are planning on testing, as well as the students whose parents notified us they were opting their child out of the ACT. Please be sure to let us know if you have any questions regarding the ACT.

ACT Prep

The RVA provides free ACT Prep to all of our full time virtual 11th graders who are taking the ACT exam.  Our ACT Prep consists of live, direct instruction classes on the make up of the ACT and strategies for doing well on the test.  We also offer free ePrep accounts for students for ACT prep. ePrep provides expert, online test prep courses for the ACT and gives students instant feedback on practice items.  Students also have the opportunity to watch online videos that include detailed answers for each question on the ACT. Watching ePrep’s expert solve the same problem a student just missed - and providing key insights and strategies along the way – exponentially increases the student’s absorption of the concepts leading to better results on test day.
